February 2021 Gazette – News from Other Islands

Middle Bass

Big news on Middle Bass Island last month was that Brynn Marshall was selling Girl Scout Cookies.

The other news was that the 140-ft. Coast Guard Cutter Neah Bay was anchored off the island’s East Point for two nights and two days in January.

Pelee Island

A Bit of Excitement! – Across the border on neighboring Pelee Island, Essex County Emergency Response Team and K-9 unit were utilized to arrest one person. Police received a complaint on Thursday, January 7th, from a resident who was threatened, they were also notified of vehicles, a pick up and an ATV, allegedly being set on fire on the island.

The next day, the Ontario Provincial Police used a helicopter to send officers and a police dog to the island where they took one person into custody without incident.

Forensic Identification Services and the Major Crime Unit have conducted an additional investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

No names involved in the incident have been released.

Pelee Island Pheasant Hunt – Registration for the 2021 Pelee Island Pheasant Hunt is open. To purchase your licence and for further information call 519-724-2931 or visit: https://www.pelee.org/pheasant-hunts/register/.

2.5K Members – The “Pelee Islanders” group on Facebook continues to grow with more than 2,500 members. The page has island photos and stories shared by its new and old members.

Stay-at-Home Orders – In spite of no Covid cases on the island, Pelee islanders are under “stay-at-home orders” coming from provincial and public health officials. The Pelee Island Co-operative Association has strongly encouraged the use of curbside pick up and grocery shopping was allowed to one person per household. Because islanders weren’t flying to the mainland as much, a second cargo flight to the island was added to the schedule by the Pelee Island Air Service.

Valentine’s Day – The Pelee Island Co-operative will be bringing in fresh flowers, chocolates and cards for Valentine’s Day. Bunches will be mixed colors and varieties (price TBD) and the chocolates will be delicious. Hopefully Rick Oulette will take advantage of this and surprise his wife.
