Senior Center News
By Chris Joyce
Let the summer fun begin … all the island’s businesses are now open! We’re enjoying the warm sunshine and blue water here on PIB! We’ve seen a definite increase in participation during our weekly activities with all the summer residents back on the island.
The Senior Center’s special programs for the month of June are: Monday, June 13th, at 10 a.m. Julie Mckitrick with Ottawa County Job & Family Services will be here to discuss Elder Abuse. Then on Wednesday, June 15th, at 4 p.m., Paul Jeris will be here to discuss his trips to Poland and the refugee crisis that has occurred due to the war in Ukraine. He will have many photos to show also. This program will be open to all islanders. Finally, on Friday, June 24th, at 10 a.m. Sheri Bourne from Stein Hospice will be doing a presentation “Nature’s First Aid Kit” – Essential Oils. Check out the calendars posted at the Senior Center, Hardware/Market, General Store, Post Office, Twp. Office and the PIB Library.
The Senior Center will be closed Monday, June 20th, for the Juneteenth Freedom Holiday.
Don’t forget staying active is a key part of enjoying your retirement and our Senior Center is doing its part to help! We are always looking for new people to participate in our activities. Remember this isn’t just for “old people” … we have such an active and fun group of “un-seniors.” Our regular weekly activities include aerobic dance/walking, strength training, coffee socials, Mah Jongg, yoga, bridge and duplicate bridge, men’s cards, Senior Lunches at Topsy’s and many other special events and activities.
Attention Seniors: We are looking for additional bridge players – if you are interested, please call the Senior Center and leave your name and phone number and someone will reach out to you!
Our Senior Lunches continue every Monday at Topsy’s at 12 noon. Please make your reservation by 12 p.m., on the prior Friday by signing up at the Senior Center or calling the center at (419) 285-5501. It is important to let Topsy’s kitchen know the lunch count by 12 p.m. the Friday before so they can plan accordingly for our Senior Lunches! A very special “Thank-You” goes out to David Hill and the staff at Topsy’s for keeping the weekly Senior Lunches running smoothly and also for making our monthly Senior Socials so much fun!
Your Health Matters: The EMS is here to take Blood Pressures every Monday at 10 a.m. The “60+ Clinic” is a free program for those 60 and older. The date for June is Thursday the 23rd, so if you’d like to take advantage of this wonderful free program, please call 419-734-6800 to make your appointment.
The “season” is upon us, so here’s wishing everyone a safe and happy summer. Take time to relax and enjoy time with family and friends!
