Vintage Sports Car Races At Put-in-Bay
The Put-in-Bay historical society will be celebrating their 11th year of honoring some of the most classic vintage sports cars and the 61st birthday of the iconic sports racer Austin Healey Bugeye Sprite. Over 70 years of Porsche’s classic sport car engineering will also be recognized. The Put-in-Bay Vintage Sports Car Races brings the entire island together to enjoy the engineering and style of these vintage vehicles. Event founder and racing director said “Bugeye Sprites was highly represented in the 1958, 1959, and 1963 races and a variety of Porsches were significant competitors at the original races”.
The Put-in-Bay vintage sports car races produced a record turnout in 2017. Featured were over 100 vintage race cars and roughly 60 street cars. The 2018 and 2019 event yielded a comparable crowd with a collection of sports cars from car makers such as Datsun, Fiat, Austin Mini, Alfa Romeo, MG, Morgan, Triumph, Porsche, Lotus, and others.
When and Where?
In order to allow for more cars to attend the event, organizers have scheduled the 2020 car races for September 22nd, 23rd, and 24th. Due to other regional vintage sports car races taking place in August, scheduling the Put-in-Bay races in late September allows for the cars to get recovery tune-ups from the other races. The cooler air in September also allows for the older cars to race more efficiently.
Some participants and spectators will be arriving Sunday the 20th to partake in the antique car parade featuring historic cars dating back to Henry Ford’s first model T. There will be a car show on Monday the 21st from 2:00-4:00pm for avid car lovers to enjoy the iconic vehicles of the past first hand.
From the 22nd through the 24th the Put-in-Bay airport will give special permission to the race car drivers to turn the airport into a racetrack. Beginning roughly around 9:30 am and ending at 5:00 pm spectators will have the opportunity to watch from the event’s various viewing areas.
